Medications That Cause Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a dental issue that occurs when there is softening of the tooth enamel. Tooth decay mostly affects young children. But also occurs in adults. It is not necessary to take antibiotics before consulting your dentist with any dental issues.

The most known causes of tooth decay are:

• Bad oral hygiene
• Formation of the plague
• Acid and bacteria
• Medical issues
Dry mouth
• Drinking and eating sugary food

Unknown to many people, some medications cause tooth decay. Research has proved that these medications help in boosting tooth decay.

AtropineMedications for Blood Pressure

Clonidine medicine which is used for high blood pressure treatment in adults is a cause of tooth decay. The medication is also used to treat children suffering from hyperactivity disorder.
Another set of drugs that aid in boosting tooth decay is Propranolol and Atropine. Propranolol is used as a medication for people with heart problems. This drug changes the saliva composition which in the end becomes less effective.

Antihistamines and Decongestants

Atropine, on the other hand, reduces the flow of saliva in the mouth. Saliva helps in washing away dirt in the mouth, and therefore lack of enough of it may result in tooth decay. Other drugs that are known to have the same characteristics as Atropine are antihistamines, for example, Benadryl and antidepressants like Elavil together with Aventyl. Another medication in this category is Detrol, which is a treatment for incontinence.

Antacids

Antacids are a treatment for heartburns and help in controlling acid production. On the other hand, the cause teeth decay in that they weaken the teeth. This is applicable especially the ones that are chewed or liquid antacids. They may also contain sugar or sweeteners which damage the teeth.

Cancer Treatment

Radiation treatment as a form of treatment of cancer of the neck or head can also hinder the flow of saliva. This occurs when the Saliva glands are damaged. This medication causes dry mouth which is a recipe for tooth decay mostly among the elderly.
